This article is written in American English, which has its own spelling conventions (color, defense, traveled) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus.
The American market for ramen was heavily influenced by servicemen returning from duty in Southeast Asia. Military personnel were exposed to a very tasty and inexpensive form of nourishment that was easy to prepare. It was also lightweight and compact for packing out to the field to supplement rations. All one needed was a canteen cup and heat tabs and you had a hot meal. Some even cracked open claymore mines to get the C4 explosive to burn as fuel.
